Whenever the Bible talks about adultery, it also refers to polygamy as one of sexual sins. Prov. 18v. 22 says that whoever gets a wife gets a good thing. It does not say whoever gets “wives” gets good “things," but whoever gets a wife. This means that in God’s doctrine, one man is entitled to one wife. It is therefore heretic for any person to support polygamy by quoting instances of people who were involved in adultery through polygamy in the Bible. The fact that the Bible mentions a sinful state of a man does not mean God is supporting sin. As long as God has not said a sin be practiced, no man should try to support it in any way. Absence of a verse directly condemning something does not mean it should be practiced as long as there is no single verse speaking in support of it.
Gen. 2vv. 20-24 says that among all created things, there was no "helper" found to be fit for Adam. That verse does not mention “helpers” but "helper." God never intended for a man to have many helpers. It also says that Adam called Eve “bone” of his “bones" NOT “bones" of his “bones.” So, man was created to have a “bone” of his “bones” not “bones” of his “bones.” It was monogamy from the beginning, no polygamy. It also says that man shall leave his parents and be united to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. It does not say man shall be united to his “wives.” Polygamy is a tool of the devil to destroy peace in families. A polygamous person is double minded. God is not the author of discord and therefore polygamy is of the devil.
John 4vv. 16-18 reveals Jesus speaking to a Samaritan woman. He tells the woman that she had had five husbands and the one she was living with was not her husband. Jesus did not say that what she was doing was right. He showed by his words that it was a sin. One woman was created for one man, not many men. Polygamy therefore is a sin of sexual uncleanness. Mark 10vv. 6-9 shows Jesus saying that God made one male and one female. God joined one man with one woman. One man leaves his parents and becomes one flesh with one wife. So, in conclusion, every Christian must embrace the doctrine of holy marriage to only one wife. If your wife or husband dies, you are free to be remarried to one woman or one man. In that case, no one should call you polygamous. You are married to only one person.
